Reduce your Carbon Footprint with Solar Evolution

Did you know that the sun provides more energy to the earth in an hour than is used worldwide in a year? Solar Power & the technology behind it, Photovoltaic cells, have been around for over 60 years. However, it’s only since the 1980s, that Solar Power has really begun to become mainstream and commercialised.

By the beginning of the 21st century, Solar had become big business.  Germany and other nations had developed a highly successful domestic solar PV market. Since then, the Solar Energy sector has gone from strength to strength. The global solar energy market was valued at $52.5 billion in 2018 and is projected to reach $223.3 billion by 2026.

This is partly due to the ever-growing climate emergency that we as a planet are facing. Climate change is happening at alarming rates and holding global warming to “well below 2 degrees Celsius” becomes a new target, as we plummet towards 1.5 Degrees.

What are the benefits of Solar Power?

Of course, the most important & relevant benefit of solar energy is it’s a renewable energy source. Solar Power technologies import clean, renewable energy from the sun, compared to non-renewable energy provided by fossil fuels like gas, oil, etc. that produce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions contribute directly to global warming, and in turn, climate change. Therefore, installing solar panels reduces our dependence on fossil fuels, and thus, reduces the impact of harmful greenhouse gases on the earth.

However, there are other major benefits of using solar, including financial benefits, such as cheaper electricity bills. It’s no secret that electricity & gas prices have been spiraling in recent weeks & months, and they show no signs of slowing down. So, reducing these bills has become a necessity for many Irish families & businesses. Solar provides a viable alternative to these high costs, as you will be meeting much of your energy requirements with the electricity your solar panels generate. This results in less reliance on other sources, thus reducing the size of your bill. There is also the added benefit of the ability of solar to store excess energy. If you generate more electricity than you use in a day then this electricity can be stored to be used again at a later date, using special solar batteries.

Businesses with large premises are in an especially good position to harness solar to cut their electricity costs. Businesses with large commercial buildings have a lot of surface area to work with, and therefore, will see a huge benefit from installing Solar Panels, as Solar energy can cover a large proportion of your bill.

It’s not just businesses that can look at a shift to solar as a long-term investment. Homeowners can also decrease their electricity bills, while simultaneously increasing the value of their house. A recent study from the American Real-Estate site Zillow found that homes with solar panels will sell for 4.1% more.

How much does it cost?

Despite all the talk of ‘savings’ & ‘lower costs’, we know that there is a cost to everything and transitioning to Solar energy is no different. Installing solar panels and connecting your solar energy to the grid all costs money. However, it’s not all bad news, in 2018, The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland announced a new scheme to offer homeowners a grant towards the cost of installing solar photovoltaics for producing electricity in their own homes.

The cost of installing Solar Panels varies greatly on a number of factors, including the hardware chosen, size of the system, monitoring equipment, and the structure and type of roof or site. However, the SEAI say that they see costs ranging from €2,000 to €3,300 per kWp. However, the cost of purchasing and installing solar panels has come down considerably in the last decade. Last year, A report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) revealed that, in 2020, 62% of total renewable power generated had lower costs than the cheapest new fossil fuel option.
