Urban Forest Creation
As part of our Urban Forest initiative, we are delighted to be working with the staff and students of Donabate Community College, and the local community and volunteers, to create a Miyawaki-inspired forest in this fantastic school in Donabate.
In July, we laid down cardboard and bark mulch to start preparing the soil for our Planting Day this autumn. The bark mulch kickstarts the mycelium activity in the soil so that the newly planted trees can avail of the beneficial fungi network when they’re planted. The mulch cover also promotes worm activity, and helps the soil become lovely and crumbly, ready for our bareroot native Irish trees.
In November, we returned with an army of CoolPartner volunteers to help the students plant over 500 native Irish trees! We’ll be returning regularly to help the students monitor the growth of their new forest.
