GMC Utilities to the rescue!

On Friday, new CoolPartner GMC Utilities came along to help out with a spot of maintenance in one of our Urban Forests in Drogheda.

After chatting about how the forest was created, the theory behind Miyawaki-style planting, and what we needed to do that day to help the young trees get established. Then the team got to work, battling valiantly against the dock weeds that towered above the young trees.

This forest was planted in a wilder area of the school, where a pocket forest had previously been planted, which we added to. The weed cover was mostly docks, and the team were hard pushed in some cases, to work out which were weeds and which were young trees! Another year or two, and the tree canopy will close over, reducing the weed burden on the forest.

The team all worked incredibly hard, and we were delighted to get the sunlight onto the young saplings again by lunchtime.

We’re really looking forward to doing more with GMC Utilities, and hopefully we’ll also see them back in Drogheda for a progress update next year! You can read all about the St Olivers urban forest project here - we’ll be keeping the page updated as the forest grows.
